Bluebird Atrium

In collaboration with Carlton M. Long, Vice President for Institutional Advancement

Creating a positive and joyful experience through art was our first objective in designing “Bluebird Atrium” for the East Tennessee Children’s Hospital.

The subsequent objectives were to create art that is consistent and compliments the look of the hospital, to enhance the architectural design of the building, to adhere to the rules and regulations concerning safety and durability, and to create artwork that the children, families, visitors and caregivers will love.

The light-filled atrium, with its open expanse of space, presented an opportunity to create a suspended sculpture that illustrated a nature theme with long strands of Bluebirds and flowers. We created a sky garden of flora and fauna that can be viewed from the floor below, and from the exterior and through surrounding windows.
